Field reaction of open pollinated okra varieties to major pests under integrated nutrient management system

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted in the District Seed Farm of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal during summer and kharif seasons of 2005 to study the field reaction of open pollinated (OP) varieties of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) against major pests under the impact of Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) System. Pusa A4 showed significant tolerance to jassid (4.32/3 leaves), while Arka Anamika to fruit borer (5.93%). However, Indam 821 showed better tolerance to jassid (5.81/3 leaves), YVMV (12.94%) and fruit borer (6.72%) when grown under INM system. Further, application of 50% recommended dose of fertilizers + biofertilizer + organic manure in the form of neem cake (both @1.25 and 2.5 t/ha) or vermicompost @ 2.5 t/ha significantly reduced jassid (4.02 – 4.50/3 leaves), YVMV (11.70 – 13.09%) and fruit borer (5.53 – 6.13%) and recorded relatively higher fruit yields of 83.03 to 85.51 q/ha. The pooled results indicated that Pusa A4 produced significantly higher total green fruit (84.46 q/ha) irrespective of INM practices. Irrespective of OP variety and INM practices, kharif grown okra recorded significantly more fruit yield (85.58 q/ha) with lower jassid injury (1.34/3 leaves).
