In the backdrop of rising evidence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its disastrous impact over human and animal health, the antimicrobial usage in food-producing animals - especially for non-therapeutic purposes - has gained worldwide attention. Scientific communities across the globe have called for optimization of antimicrobial use (AMU) in all the sectors including animal husbandry in order to preserve the efficacy of medically important antimicrobials. Although AMU is the single most important driver for AMR in any sector, there is no incontrovertible evidence to link AMU in animals with development of AMR in human beings. This article tried to reflect current trends of AMU and emergence of AMR in food animals and possible avenues to tackle this multifaceted problem.
