This study was undertaken to detect Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in clinical samples by RT-PCR targeting ORF5 gene. Further the complete gene of ORF5 (Gp5) from outbreak occurred at different places were cloned and sequenced for phylogenetic analysis. Samples received from Lawngtlai and Saiha district of Mizoram were detected positive for PRRSV and two representative samples were considered for sequence analysis. Phylogenetic analysis revealed both the sequence belonged to the North American type (type-2) and are closely related to the sequences recorded from the earlier outbreaks in Mizoram. Sequences are showing similarity to the highly pathogenic type (HP-PRRSV) reported from different south Asian countries including neighbouring Myanmar. Nucleotide sequence similarity of both the sequence is 99.2%, however, sequence derived from previous outbreaks in Mizoram ranged between 98.2% and 99.7%.
