Activities of some antibiotics against Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated from Camel

Abstract

The antibiogram studies are used to find out suitable antibiotic for therapeutic purposes or to record any emergence of resistance or susceptibility of bacteria against particular antibiotic. In the present investigation, 46 Staphylococcus aureus isolates obtained from camel skin wounds and abscesses were subjected to antibiogram typing against 33 different antibiotics through disk diffusion test to find out most effective antibiotic to be used in cases of wounds and abscesses in camel. One of the purposes of the study was to know the proportion of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in camel. The study showed that ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were the most effective antibiotics with 98% S. aureus isolates exhibiting susceptibility to these antibiotics. S. aureus were susceptible to gentamicin, moxifloxacin, nalidixic acid, pefloxacin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, trimethoprim, amoxicillin, cloxacillin, chlortetracycline, novobiocin, amikacin, sparfloxacin, cotrimoxazole, levofloxacillin, methicillin (MRSA) in decreasing order up to 80%. None of the S. aureus showed resistance to gentamicin, cotrimoxazole, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, sparfloxacin, moxifloxacin, tetracycline and nalidixic acid. Maximum resistance was observed against bacitracin, metronidazole, ampicillin and penicillin-G. In this investigation, 15% of S. aureus have been found resistant to methicillin which is almost similar to that for human isolates. From the pattern obtained, it can be speculated that the MRSA strains in camels have come from the human source as the camels are being kept by owners in close proximity as they are important source of their livelihood in arid and semi-arid regions.
