Twenty two isolates of Pasteurella multocida obtained from dead emu birds in and around Anand town of Gujarat state of India, were subjected to the study for detection of genes for 13 virulence associated factors by using PCR. All the isolates were found to carry genes for the outer membrane protein (ompH, oma87), sialidase (nanB), Iron acquisition factor (hgbA), superoxide dismutase (sodA, sodC), Pasteurella like lipoprotein E (plpE), type 4 fimbria protein (ptfA) and filamentous heamaglutinin (pfhA) while genes for the sialidase (nanH), iron acquisition factor (tbpA) and dermatotoxin factor (toxA) could not be detected in any of the isolates. Further three isolates were negative for hgbB. Detection of virulence associated genes among the isolates indicated their virulence potential.
