A rapid slide co-agglutination test was standardized for the detection of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) antigen in infected tissue homogenates and tissue culture fluid. The Newcastle disease antibodies adsorbed onto Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I strain (containing protein A in their cell wall) specifically agglutinated the antigen in a simple slide agglutination reaction. The agglutination was observed within 1 min and the test was found as sensitive as the haemagglutination test. The test was able to detect the antigen in the samples of the tissue culture adapted virus antigen where the haemagglutination activity gets markedly reduced. The test is easy to perform, simple and can be used for rapid sero-detection of NDV antigen.
