Pulmonary and systemic immune response in pigs vaccinated with P. multocida bacterin vaccine

The present study was undertaken to select an effective route of vaccination against Pasteurellosis in pigs. Formalin inactivated plain bacterin as well as oil adjuvanted bacterin of the pathogenic P. multocida isolated from pig was used to immunize pigs by intranasal and intramuscular routes. Humoral immune response was evaluated in serum and broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL). The mean ELISA titre was found to be higher in the animals receiving intramuscular vaccination than those vaccinated through intranasal route. Pulmonary immune response evaluated in BAL also indicated better immune response in the group receiving intramuscular vaccination. Cellular composition of BAL reflected more activated lymphocytes in immunized pigs.
