Vibrio Microfauna associated with different development stages of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to identify and quantify vibrio species in a commercial culture of the marine shrimp species Litopenaeus vannamei in North-Eastern Brazil. Two culture cycles of Litopenaeus vannamei were followed on a shrimp farm in Ceará, Brazil, during 2005. The study variables included the number of saccharose-positive and negative colonies and species diversity. The 76 vibrio strains isolated from shrimp at different developmental stages belonged to 14 species: V. harveyi and V. cholerae prevailed among postlarvae; V. cholerae, V. anguillarum, V. alginolyticus and V. harveyi among juveniles; and V. parahaemolyticus, V. harveyi and V. anguillarum among adult specimens.
