Seroepidemiological study of bovine leptospirosis in West Bengal

Abstract

To determine the pattern of bovine leptospirosis in various districts, agro-climatic zones and organized farms in West Bengal, a total of 291 serum samples of cattle were tested by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) using six serovars of Leptospira spp. viz. Australis, Canicola, Bataviae, Grippotyphosa, Hardjo and Pomona. District-wise analysis revealed highest sero-prevalence in Malda district (36.36%) followed by district Nadia (28.17%), West Medinipur (16.67%) and Bardhaman (7.5%) with a maximum prevalence of serovar Hardjo followed by Bataviae, Canicola and Australis. Higher prevalence was recorded in New Alluvial zone (25.73%) followed by Old Alluvial zone (6.17%). The prevalence was higher in bulls (43.02%) than cows and heifers (5.85%). The present investigation reports the sero-epidemiological condition of bovine leptospirosis that needs due attention.
