Brucellosis is a major zoonotic disease, widely distributed in both human and animals specifically in the developing countries like India. It is estimated that brucellosis causes heavy economic losses in animals’ production. The disease should be diagnosed promptly. In the present study, we have developed a multiplex PCR for the identification of Brucella species and B. melitensis isolates in a single test. In this multiplex PCR assay, there were 2 bands with B. melitensis at the expected size of 130 and 270 bp; where as, only one band at 130 bp with other Brucella strains such as B. abortus and no band with E. coli DNA, explaining the specificity of this multiplex PCR. This multiplex PCR will reduce the time and reagent cost required to diagnose brucellosis.
