Heterogeneity among Salmonella enterica weltevreden isolates of diverse host origin

Abstract

A total of 37 isolates of S. enterica Weltevreden of diverse host origin were screened for their heterogeneity based on the sugar fermentation, bacteriocin production, deoxyribonuclease and haemolysin production. All the isolates revealed the DNase but none were positive for haemolysin and bacteriocin production. On the basis of the sugar fermentation pattern, the organisms could be grouped in four major biotypes. Majority of the isolates belonged to the biotype I irrespective of the host and the geography. The antibiotic studies showed multiple drug resistance and 81% of the isolates were resistant to 5 or more antibiotics. On the basis of the resistance or sensitiveness to nitrofurantoin the isolates were grouped in the four antibiotic types but there was no correlation between the biotypes and the antibiotypes.
