Fifty three isolates of Escherichia coli were recovered from diarrhoeic cases of domestic animals and poultry. Biotyping, antibiogram typing, resistotyping, serotyping, colicin typing, colicin sensitivity and plasmid profile analysis were compared as epidemiological tools for differentiation and identification of the isolates. Plasmid profile analysis in conjunction with any one of the six tests, proved to be better epidemiological tool than any single test.
