Occurrence of Shiga toxigenic Escherichia coli in livestock and poultry in north-eastern India

Abstract

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was standardized and employed to screen the presence of Shiga toxin genes (stx1 & 2) and other associated virulence genes (hlyA, rfbO157) in 191 Escherichia coli isolated from stool samples of cattle (25), pigs (45) goats (15), poultry birds (85), ducks (20), rabbits (5) and mice (5). The occurrence of Shiga toxin gene/s was highest among laboratory animals (33.3%) followed by goats (25.00%), cattle (20.83%), poultry birds (8.43%) and pigs (7.14%). None of the E. coli isolates from ducks was found to be positive for stx gene. Of the different virulence genes, the occurrence of Shiga toxin genes, stx1 was highest (4.1%) followed by stx2, both stx genes (1.5%), hlyA (1.5%), and rfbO157 gene (1.04%). Overall distribution of Shiga toxin gene/s was 9.94% in livestock, poultry and laboratory animals.
