Abstract

A study was conducted on Vrindavani cattle at Cattle and Buffalo Farm, I.V.R.I., Izatnagar (India), from 1999–2010 to evaluate the efficacy of different dam evaluation methods. The methods tried were Best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), Single trait selection (STS), Expected breeding value (EBV) and Most probable producing ability (MPPA). Rank correlations among the four methods of dam evaluation showed significantly high degree of association (P<0.01) in between BLUP and EBV, followed by MPPA and STS. Efficacy of the four methods has been compared on the basis of minimum CV (%) observed through predicted breeding value of dams with respect to FLMY305. The BLUP expressed minimum CV (2.42%) with increasing CV trend towards STS (3.13%), EBV (8.77%) and maximum with MPPA. BLUP was considered as the best method among all the four methods of dam evaluation followed by STS, EBV and MPPA. However, all four methods can be efficiently use for dam evaluation.
