Characterization of Pasteurella Multocida Isolated From Pneumonic Pigs of Assam

Characterization of pig isolates of Pasteurella multocida has been carried out on the basis of PCR analysis, mouse bio-assay and electrophoretic migration pattern. Out of 20 swine isolates of P. multocida two isolates (LKD and DP) caused 100 per cent mortality in the inoculated mice. Comparing with that of P₅₂ strain, mean death time of LKD strain was lower. The molecular weight of the sonicated extracts of different swine isolates were not homogenous and ranged from 91.2 kDa to 16.6 kDa. While in case of P₅₂ reference strain molecular weights ranged from 83.2 kDa to 18.2 kDa. There were 18 bands in pig isolates and 17 protein bands in P₅₂ strain. Study revealed that the pig isolate (LKD) was more pathogenic than that of P₅₂ strain and differed in number and migration of protein bands.
