Induced simple and strangulated intestinal obstruction in canines biochemical studies*

Abstract

Eighteen clinically healthy adult dogs were random1y divided into 3 equal groups. Simple obstruction (Group A), strangulated obstruction (group B) and strangulated isolated loop (Group C) of jejunum were surgically created under general anaesthesia. Plasma urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations progressively increased, whereas plasma sodium, potassium, chloride and total proteins showed a decreasing trend throughout the period of observations in animals of all the groups. In peritoneal fluid, the levels of sodium and potassium decreased gradually, whereas urea nitrogen and chloride levels showed a steady increase in all the groups. The values of inorganic phosphorus did not show any significant change in plasma and peritoneal fluid.
