Abstract

In 24 clinically healthy adult mongrel dogs divided into 4 groups of 6 animals each, a transverse middle third diaphyseal segmental defect of 1. 2 cm was created in the ulma. The healing of the gap was evaluated biochemically following repair with autogenous cancellous bone (Group-II), fibrillar collagen-hydroxyapatite composite (Group-III), porous hydroxyapatite (Group-IV). The gap was unfilled in control group (Group-I). The changes in serum calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels were compared with clinical and radiological findings and it is concluded that the fibrillar collagen-hydroxyapatite composite implants can be used as a suitable alternative to the use of autogenous cancellous bone in repair of segmental bone loss defects or non-union fractures.
