The basics of Submerged Arc Welding & the effect of changing the Basicity Index of Flux on the Mechanical Properties (Ultimate Tensile Strength & Toughness) has been studied using 6 Flux of different Basicity Index. The test weld metal chosen is High Strength Low Alloy Steel (HSLA) steel (A588 - Grade A). HSLA Steel is different from other steel in the way that they are made to meet mechanical properties rather than any specific chemical composition. By changing the basicity of the flux, it was found that both the Ultimate Tensile Strength & the Toughness of the weld varied i.e. higher the Basicity Index, lesser the Sulphur, Silicon & oxygen content, thereby increasing the acicular ferrite content and thus the Ultimate Tensile Strength & the Impact Toughness
