The theory of grey system is a new technique for performing prediction, relational analysis, and decision making in many areas. This study investigated the optimization of CNC turning operation parameters for EN 31 using the Grey relational analysis method to minimize surface roughness (Ra and Rz) and diametral deviation (φ). Nine experimental runs based on an orthogonal array of Taguchi method were performed. The surface properties of roughness average and roughness maximum as well as the diametral deviation were selected as the quality targets. An optimal parameter combination of the turning operation was obtained via Grey relational analysis. The results of the study reveals that cutting speed of 120 m/min, feed rate of 0.18mm/rev, and depth of cut of 0.45 mm, yields optimum value of the multi-performance characteristics. From the ANOVA results it is found that the cutting speed and feed rate significantly affect the multi-performance characteristics and cutting speed is the dominant factor with a percentage contribution of 69.014% followed by the feed rate and depth of cut having percentage contribution of 25.352% and 4.929% respectively.
