Mechanical car jacks are light in weight and use mechanical advantage to allow a human to lift a vehicle by manual force. This paper presents an optimum design of a Y-type automotive jack with best power screws for optimum efficiency. Screw jack was modelled with power screws of ACME threads and was analysed using finite element analysis software. Selection of material was based on recent application of high strength steels. Stress concentration profiles and failure analysis were studied both analytically and numerically. Analysis of jack was done for a saloon car at varying lift heights, i.e. from the point where load has just been lifted to the maximum height to which jack can raise the weight. Equivalent stress and strain were determined for the various parts of the jack assembly for optimum design
