Abstract

The main aims of the current study are to make people aware of the perils of a poorly designed system of an existing building and showcasing the flaws in an existing design and proposing ways to overcome those flaws. It was observed that there was rampant misuse of freshwater in an existing setup due to inefficient fixtures and no effort was made to reuse gray water for irrigation and flushing purposes. Sewage treatment plant was proposed along with the low flow fixtures, simulations were performed using sample size which showed that almost 50% freshwater can be saved by employing these design developments. Rainwater harvesting is also an important technique that is used for accumulation and storage rainwater into reservoirs or tanks or the infiltration of surface water into subsurface aquifers before it is lost by running off, it was seen that there was no provision of rainwater harvesting, in the proposed study, rainwater harvesting measures as per the building codes thereby helping recharge the groundwater level. Electricity is one of the biggest running costs in any infrastructure and it was observed that no effort was made to optimize that therefore, the proposed solar panels for hot water generation instead of conventional electric hot water boiler thereby reducing electric power consumption by 15-20% of total electricity consumption. These developments led to an overall increase in green building points along with more efficient operations of the building. It is advisable for all developers, engineers and concerned individuals to efficiently analyze the design principles because as we move forward into our future, it is our responsibility towards our future generation to leave them with a better world.
