A review on nanoparticle-loaded hydrogels for extended drug release

Abstract

Nanoparticles is a unique set of properties for drug delivery including high drug loading capacity, combinatorial delivery, controlled and sustained drug release, prolonged stability and lifetime, and targeted delivery. There has been significant progress in recent years in resolving the clinical and pharmacological limitations of hydrogels for drug delivery applications. Extended drug release means the pill is formulated so that the drug is released slowly over time. This has the advantage of taking pills less often. Also means that there may be few side effects as the levels of the of drug in the body are more consistent in extended-release formulations. Extended drug release dosage including sustained-release and controlled-release dosage. Sustained release maintains the drug release over a sustained period but not at a constant rate. Controlled-release maintains drug release over a sustained period at a nearly constant rate.
