Abstract

A reliability model for a system having bidirectional and revertible 1: 1 protection switching scheme for an optical communication process with activation time is developed. The scheme under consideration comprises four optical lines out of which two are operative (working paths) and the other two are cold-standby (protection paths). Signals are transmitted through working path only from one user to other. Transmission and receiving of signals take place from one user to the other through two paths-one active and the other inactive initially. Active path is named as working path and the inactive path is protection path. If any working path gets failed then the other working path is put to down state and signals are received/transmitted through the protection paths after getting them activated. Time taken to activate the protection path so as to act as working path is also taken into consideration while developing the model. After completion of the repair, the working path again gets activated and protection path is set to cold standby. Various measures of system effectiveness including the availability have been obtained using semi-Markov processes and regenerative point technique. Analysis of profit has also been carried out.
