Abstract

Dealing with the problem of incommensurability of circumference and diameter, the 14th century Kerala mathematician Sangamagrama Madhava broke the barriers of finite and landed into the highly fertile area of infinite. He discovered infinite series expressions for circumference in terms of diameter and made startling discoveries in the field of infinite series and series approximations. An innovative and interesting end-correction technique devised by Madhava for approximating the Madhava circumference-diameter series is found applicable to various other alternating series and a couple of these are discussed in this paper along with the Madhava series.
